After getting into a fight with an enemy gang member, Yale sent Capone to Chicago to cool off, and wait until things settled down in Chicago before returning. this is where al Capone met yalespast mentor and head of the mafia in Chicago, John torrio. torrio soon seen al's potential in being a mobster. he was both physically strong and intelligent. this was a rare combination to find in this era. al quickly rose through the ranks in torrios bootlegging business, and half way through 1922 became known as torrios second man. when Torrio was shot in 1925, he decided to leave chicago for a more quiet life. he left everything to Capone, making him leader of the outfit. his men liked and trusted him, and eventually nick named him the big fellow. al was even better at his job then torrio was, between 1925-1930, he ended up expanding the industry left to him greatly. . al ran a variety of different illegal institutes: speakeasies, bookie joints, gambling houses, brothels, horse and race tracks, nightclubs, distilleries and breweries at a reported income of $100,000,000 a year. the mayor of Chicago, William (big bill) hale Thompson had been doing business with al Capone for 3 years when in 1928, he decided it was bad for his political image. he began hiring police to run Capone out of Boston, eventually succeeding in 1928. al fled to palm island, Florida where he continued expanding his business without fear of prosecution. |
